Our culture revolves around respecting our seniors. This is because they are the ones who teach us the life lessons through the extensive experience that they have.

But, it is disheartening to know that on an average, 1 out of 5 seniors suffers serious injuries or other medical issues due to falling. Falls can be messy both physically and financially!

Though people argue that falls of any kind, specifically for seniors, are inevitable and cannot be predicted. Well, if they cannot be predicted, they surely can be prevented.

Also, as a matter of fact, falling is not inevitable and with things like community partnership, adjustment in lifestyle, and other committee based learning, these falls can be prevented up to a lot of extent.

Let us look at a few ways through which you can prevent your seniors from falling:

  • Make them aware

The first and the foremost thing is to sit and have a normal conversation about fall prevention with them. Because even though a lot of seniors believe that falling is a risk, but they often ignore the fact that it can happen to them as well.

They might have fallen in the past. Still, you’ll find them believing that nothing harsh would happen to them. Thus, it is necessary to have this conversation and make them believe that they are at an equal risk as others in terms of getting hurt.

  • Schedule a medical checkup

It is highly recommended to have a medical checkup once in two months. Every senior has the right to know about their mental and physical health thoroughly. Not only they, you should know about their medical condition as well.

  • Get their eyes checked regularly

In addition to their body checkup, make sure that their eye sight is perfect and if not, ensure that they are making use of specks. Any kind of defect in the human eye can lead to frequent falling or bumping into things.

Also, the glasses they use must be accurate and must be advised by a good doctor.

  • Consult a physical therapist

If you notice that the seniors are having difficulty while getting up, or walking, or, if they take support while walking, then it is high time to consult a physical therapist. Yes! The therapist will help them to work on their body balance and would help them in boosting their strength to walk properly via exercises.

  • Healthy lifestyle

Last but not the least, make sure that the seniors have a healthy lifestyle. There is nothing which a maintained diet, handful of exercises cannot cure.
